ALAO 39th Annual Conference

Proposals are now being accepted for the ALAO Annual Conference. The deadline for proposals is June 7, 2013. Proposals should be submitted online via: http://osu.campusguides.com/sessions

The ALAO Conference Planning Committee invites you to submit proposals for presentations for the 2013 Annual Conference. Applicants are encouraged to develop creative proposals that show thoughtful exploration of this year’s conference theme: “The Changing Faces of Academic Libraries: Transforming, Reorganizing, Re-imagining.” You are encouraged to share your experiences, solutions, expertise, and innovative practices with colleagues from all types of academic libraries.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

Transforming:

• Collaboration – departments, community, groups
• Collections – print vs. electronic
• Outside the box – new initiatives
• Services – areas of student experience

Reorganizing:

• Library spaces – physical and virtual, active learning
• Staffing – new roles, new positions, new responsibilities
• Budget (electronic vs. print)
• Collections – maintenance
• Services

Re-imagining Library instruction:

• first year, second year groups, international, special groups (veterans), online
• Library reference – online, in person, new methods, assessment, tools used
• Library services
• Collaboration
• Budget – expertise needed?, IT
• Collections – digital initiatives, data
• Assessment
• Library as information portal

Guidelines:
You are welcome to submit multiple proposals, however, please know that no more than 2 will be included in the final program.

• All proposals will be blind-reviewed for content, relevance to the conference theme, and overall appeal. A concise, clearly written description and abstract will help the reviewers evaluate your offering more clearly.
• Exclude the name of your institution, department and any personal names in the abstract to expedite the blind review process. You do not need to exclude this information in the brief description.
• You will be contacted regarding your AV/technology requirements when your proposal is accepted.
• All presenters will be responsible for their own registration and travel costs.
• Please print a copy of the completed form for your records before submitting.
• You will receive an email confirmation upon submission. If you do not receive this confirmation email, please contact: Diane Schrecker, Ashland University Library at alao.cpc@gmail.com

Presentations may take the form of contributed papers, demonstrations, workshops, research, or panel discussions.

This is a friendly reminder that the Professional Development Committee and the Support Staff Interest Group of Academic Library Association of Ohio invite you to join us for rebroadcasts of two ACRL webcasts on Friday, May 31st at The Ohio State University at Newark. Space is limited to the first 100 registrants so please register early to save your spot.

“The Crisis in Academic Libraries (and Why This is the Best Thing Ever)” will play from 10:00 – 11:30 AM and “Fair Use in Your Library after Georgia State” will play from 1:00 – 2:30PM. Attendees are welcome to come to either or both sessions. Each session will be followed by a brief opportunity to converse with colleagues on these important topics. Re-broadcasts are only available in-person that day.

Registration for these webcast rebroadcasts is free for ALAO members and $30 for non-members (the cost of a one year membership to ALAO). Attendees can bring their lunch or visit one of the many convenient options close to campus during the break. Coffee, tea and water will be available through out the day.

The Crisis in Academic Libraries (and Why This is the Best Thing Ever)

There is a crisis in academic libraries and librarianship. Or so we are being told. Frankly, Michael Ridley delighted. This is happening not a moment too soon. While there are some significant challenges in our field, the real looming crisis is that we might not grasp the tremendous opportunity before us. It’s time to escape the echo chamber and break out of the filter bubble. Our universities are at a critical stage of transformation.

Fair Use in Your Library after Georgia State

90 minutes
In this webcast, copyright librarians and lawyers will explore and dissect the court’s framework using specific examples from the Georgia State case in order to explain the ruling, the effect that the case may have on future fair use analyses, and its impact on library policies such as course reserves and interlibrary loan.

Save the Date! ALAO’s Special Collections & Archives Interest Group will be holding its first Spring Workshop on Friday, May 10, 2013 at OhioNet in Columbus, Ohio. The topic will be Outreach for Special Collections and Archives and we will have a speaker panel and discussion. The workshop will begin at 10:00 and check-in will begin at 9:30. Lunch will be served and we anticipate the day ending no later than 3:00. We hope that this workshop will be a great opportunity for special collections librarians, archivists, and academic librarians in general to talk about successes in the area of outreach and exchange ideas for better promoting Ohio’s special collections and archives.

Melanie earned her Ph. D. and M.L.I.S. from Kent State University and has published in the areas of technical services and Cataloging, including articles on workflow, the importance of practicums, public and academic collaboration, and remote technical services. Melanie will share practical information garnered from her research and experience about the challenges and rewards of remote technical services.

Change Management is a difficult topic for anyone, especially libraries. Libraries have been dealing with the many different aspects of change: the bridge between old and new, print and electronic and the decrease in staffing. Wayne State University Libraries has been faced with these exact changes and more. Some have happened in the past, but more recently, changes that have affected its culture.

Next generation change is difficult for any organization. OhioLINK is entering its “second generation” on multiple fronts: the leadership and staffing of OhioLINK central has changed, many of the founding OhioLINK libraries’ staff and directors have retired; and the leadership of a foundational OhioLINK partner, Innovative Inc., has changed also. What are the implications for OhioLINK central and membership, and what sorts of strategies can organizations use to define and develop a new course?

The ALAO Research and Publications Committee is very pleased to announce the 2013 RPC Research Grant Program Award winners. The committee received a total of five very impressive applications and would like to extend sincere thanks to all of our applicants. We look forward to hearing more about their exciting research projects, and we very much appreciate your participation in the 2013 RPC research grant program!

For this year’s program the committee elected to grant a single award of $944.50 to a cohort of three Ohio University researchers in support of a project entitled, Informed Instruction: A Needs Assessment Model for Library Workshop Implementation. This project will address the information needs of Ohio University graduate students and implications for instructional design. The study will explore how the information needs of on-campus graduate students differ from those of graduate distance learners, whether or not there is a need for out-of-class instruction for both on-campus and distance students, and what format these instruction opportunities should take in order to maximize the efficiency of student learning and limited staff time.
