ALA TechSource and Library Boing Boing are offering an exciting series of free webinars, Makerspaces: A New Wave of Library Service. In this series of four 60-minute webinars, registrants will have the opportunity to learn about a fast-growing library phenomenon from librarians who have been ahead of the pack. ALA Excellence in Library Programming Award
The ALA Public Programs Office is taking nominations for the ALA Excellence in Library Programming Award until December first. “The award will recognize a library that demonstrates excellence in library programming by developing and presenting a cultural or thematic program or program series during the previous year (September 1, 2011 – August 31, 2012). The Award consists of $5,000 and a citation of achievement, to be presented during the ALA Award Presentation at the 2013 ALA Annual Conference.”

Support Staff Symposium
SWON will be hosting a symposium for support staff titled “Convincing Communications.”
Description: Think about it: most communications tasks – grant proposals, presentations, cover letters, job interviews, even teaching – are actually persuasive. Whether through the spoken or written word, the communicator seeks at some level to convince the audience of the message’s value. The challenge, of course, is that the typical audience doesn’t seek to be persuaded! That’s why defining you audience and leading with their goal are so important. In this “keynote workshop,” participants will gain hands-on experience using simple frameworks to profile and audience and organize content; and then create a communications plan to deliver desire results.
